Why Support Local?

Last week we looked at why being a local business owner rocks (if you missed it you can read it here), but just why should we support other local business owners?

You’ve seen them all before, all the stats, all the pictures, all of the videos, so I wanted to share with you a mix of the best.

Video:

Short and sweet – but with a great point. This video clearly shows how we will quickly loose our uniqueness and independence without supporting local businesses.

I love how this picture doesn’t just focus on price and environment, but also on creating an experience. The power in local businesses is really in the community around them and the feeling that they can generate.

How not to do it:

Early in 2011, the Labour Government ran a buy local Queensland scheme, that was designed to encourage people to buy Queensland produce. The produced stickers, t-shirts and posters to support the program. Unfortunately they made the foolish decision of having the t-shirts made in Bangladesh… not exactly local.

You can read the story in the Brisbane Times here.

Final Thought:

There is power in numbers. As buyers and as local business owners, band together as a community to create the  change that you want to see.
